WII says there are 718 snow leopards in Himalayas

Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, on Tuesday released a report on the Status of Snow leopards which revealed that the Himalayan region in India is having a total population of 718 magnificent wildcat species.
The report under the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) Program is the first-ever scientific exercise that reports Snow leopard population in India with Ladakh on the top with 477 snow leopards.
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) was the National Coordinator for this exercise that was carried out with support the support of all snow leopard range states and two conservation partners, the Nature Conservation Foundation, Mysuru and WWF-India.
A total of 241 unique Snow leopards were photographed. Based on data analysis, the estimated population in different states is as follows: Ladakh 477, Uttarakhand 124, Himachal Pradesh 51, Arunachal Pradesh 36, Sikkim 21, and Jammu and Kashmir 9.
Commenting on the survey, WII said it is a monumental stride towards conservation of magnificent cat species snow leopards in India.
