The Uttarakhand government on Wednesday requested all dignitaries and top officials in the country to avoid the Chardham yatra for the first 15 days beginning from May 10, a period when the yatra will be overcrowded.

In a letter to all chief secretaries of states and union territories, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi said over 10 lakh pilgrims are expected to undertake the Chardham yatra in the first 15 days beginning from May 10 for which the registration has already been done.

“While the Uttarakhand state administration is gearing up for hosting the pilgrims and hassle-free yatra, considering the unprecedented footfall, it is requested that dignitaries and state officials may avoid visiting the Dhams during the period from 10th – 25th May, 2024, for the sake of convenience. I would request your support in making the Chardham yatra 2024 a memorable experience for all devotees,” Raturi said in her letter.

The Chardham yatra will begin on May 10 with the reopening of the portals of three shrines – Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri on this day. The portals of Badrinath shrine will be reopened on May 12 at 6 AM.

So far, over 17.88 lakh pilgrims have registered with the official portal of the state government for the Chardham yatra.

Meanwhile, all the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Chardham yatra are being finalized. Despite his business in the election campaign, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is constantly monitoring the preparations for the yatra, an official statement said.
