Irate journalists belonging to the Uttaranchal Press Club on Thursday demanded an unconditional apology from state Congress President Karan Mahra within three days following a brawl with the party workers during a cricket match in Dehradun on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Mahra expressed “regret” and blamed the state police for the incident which occurred inside a stadium in the police line in Dehradun. Mahra said the police brought him along with Congress workers inside the stadium where the cricket match was in progress. This brawl occurred due to some “misunderstanding”, Mahra claimed.

However, no one was injured in the incident in the police line where the cricket match was being organized by the Uttaranchal Press Club. The police later dispersed the Congress workers from the ground. Uttaranchal Press Club President Ajay Rana said “a group of Congress workers led by Karan Mahra entered into the stadium raising slogans and started disrupting the match. When we tried to stop them (Congress workers), they started roughing up journalists.”

Rana later convened a meeting of the Club on Thursday to protest against the incident. In the meeting, Rana said it was decided that Mahra must apologize before the Club President within three days failing which journalists will launch a movement against the Congress party in the state.
