Fulfilling the BJP’s 2022 election promise, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has come into effect in Uttarakhand.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami issued an official notification through remote control at a function in Dehradun to implement the UCC. “From today, the UCC has been implemented,” the Chief Minister said.

With this, Uttarakhand has become the first state to implement the UCC after the independence, he said. The UCC is already in place in Goa.

Top official said the state government has already completed all the formalities towards implementing the UCC as per its election promise made few days before the assembly election in 2022.

After the formation of the new BJP government in the state in March 2022, in the first meeting of the Cabinet itself, it was decided to constitute an expert committee to implement the UCC in the state. In this sequence, a five-member expert committee was constituted under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. On the basis of the report of the committee, the UCC Bill 2024 was passed by the State Legislative Assembly on February 7, 2024. After getting the assent of President Droupadi Murmu on this bill, its notification was issued on March 12, 2024.

After the issuance of the notification, the rules of the UCC Uttarakhand 2024 Act have also been formulated.

The Chief Minister said a portal and mobile app have also been launched for the UCC so that all the facilities like registration and appeals are done through online.
