Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday tabled a draft bill on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the Vidhan Sabha amid chanting of “ Vande Matram and Jai Shri Ram” by the ruling BJP members.

After the tabling of the UCC Uttarakhand 2024 Bill, the leader of the opposition Yashpal Arya appealed to Speaker Ritu Khanduri to give time for the opposition members to study the bill. After hearing Arya’s plea, Khanduri said the opposition will get the time in this regard.

The move to table the bill on the second day of the special session of the Vidhan Sabha came after the approval of the UCC draft in the Sunday’s meeting of the state cabinet which was presided over by the Chief Minister.

On Friday, members of a high-powered committee have submitted the 740 page draft to the Chief Minister.

A UCC for Uttarakhand was one of the major poll planks of the BJP in the run-up to the state assembly elections held in the year 2022.
After being voted to power for a second consecutive term, Dhami gave his nod to setting up a committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to prepare the draft of the UCC at the very first cabinet meeting.
The expert panel whose tenure was extended for a fourth time recently has taken the opinions of 2.33 lakh people and those of different organizations, institutions and tribal groups before preparing the draft.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt has expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for tabling the UCC bill in the state assembly session. Ends
