Five people including a child were killed and 200 injured when a car crashed into a crowded Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg, media reports said on Saturday.
The attack was carried out by a lone suspected terrorist identified as 50 year old Saudi Arabian citizen who was working as a doctor. He has been arrested.
CCTV footage shared on social media shows a car speeding into pedestrians at the market with children crying. “It was a very horrific scene with dozens of people being mowed down in split seconds. We saw blood everywhere,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying.
“I saw people lying on the ground, some piled up on each other,” said another witness.
German Chancellor Oaf Scholz visited Magdeburg and met the injured in the hospitals. He appealed to the people in Germany to stay together and avoid fostering hatred. He assured Germany that the perpetrator of the attack will not go unpunished.
