Tragedy: Five of family drown in Lonavala area

In a tragic incident, five members of a family were feared drowned in Pune’s Lonavala area of Maharashtra, media reports said on Monday.

While the bodies of a 36 year old woman and two minor girl were recovered on Sunday, a search operation is underway to trace other missing persons, media reports said quoting police officials. By the afternoon, one more body of a child was recovered.

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm on Sunday due to a sudden rise in the waterfall following heavy rains trapping the Ansari family members as the water came in big burst.

Videos showed the family members putting up great struggle to escape from the fast currents but soon lost their balance and swept away.

Pune Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Rural Pankaj Deshmukh said all the five people were part of a family and slipped into a waterfall some two km away from Bhushi dam and drowned in the reservoir downstream.
