In a swift action, the Uttarakhand police on Sunday night arrested three policemen and four others for robbing Rs 5 lakh from a person under the pretext of giving him dollars at low-price.

The arrest came after Yashpal Singh Aswal, a Rishikesh-based property dealer, lodged a complaint of robbery in Premnagar police station in Dehradun hours earlier alleging that a bag with Rs 5 lakh in cash was snatched by these people, said Ajai Singh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun.

He said one of the three accused policemen involved in the incident, Iqrar (43), is currently posted in Premnagar police station, while the other two, Abdul Rehman (34) and Salam (32), are posted in India Reserve Battalion (IRB) located in Jhajra of Premnagar area.

Aswal in his complaint had stated that some time ago he met Kundan Negi, a resident of Chamoli, who told him that a person living in Mori of Uttarkashi district wants to convert his 20000 dollars into rupees. Aswal said he struck a deal with Negi for the exchange of 20,000 dollars for about Rs 8 lakh in Indian currency.

According to the complaint, on January 31, he reached near Balaji temple in Jhajra with a bag containing Rs 7.5 lakh to buy dollars. In Jhajra, Aswal said he met four more people besides Negi. During their conversation, two more people suddenly came claiming to be policemen. Aswal alleged that they threatened him and snatched his bag full of money but returned Rs 2.5 lakh from it. Aswal also stated that he was thrashed and abused by these people. Aswal said that one of the two policemen was in his uniform while the other was in plain clothes.

The SSP said that on the basis of the complaint, a case was registered under section 310(2)/61(2) of the BNS and a police team was formed to investigate the case. After a detailed investigation with the help of CCTV cameras, seven persons including three policemen involved in the crime were arrested.
