THDC India Ltd on Thursday announced successful commissioning of India’s first Variable Speed 1000 MW Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri with the synchronization of its First unit (250 MW) to the Indian Grid in Pump Condenser Mode.

“The Pump Condenser synchronization marked a significant leap in the development of India’s Renewable Energy infrastructure. During the synchronization, Unit behaviour was satisfactory and successfully consumed approx. 4 MW, 13.6Mvar for approx. 10 minutes,” said R. K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDCIL.

Vishnoi congratulated PSP officials for the achievement, underscoring the critical role this milestone plays in enhancing the Indian Grid’s capacity and stability. “This is a Novel Benchmark, bringing India’s largest Hydro Power Complex, the Tehri Hydro Power Complex closer to full operationalization with a total installed capacity of 2,400 MW,” he said.

Vishnoi further added that this achievement is a testament to our commitment to strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure. It positions the Tehri Hydro Power Complex as a key contributor to the nation’s transition towards a sustainable and resilient energy future. The Tehri PSP will play a pivotal role in balancing the Northern Grid by converting surplus off-peak energy into peaking power ensuring a steady and reliable electricity supply to millions of consumers. With a total capacity of 1000 MW, this Plant is designed to deliver crucial peaking power support to the grid, particularly during times of high demand.

Shallinder Singh, Director (Personnel), THDCIL appreciated the officials at Tehri PSP for this  achievement and added that this accomplishment marks a significant chapter in India’s renewable energy journey, reinforcing THDC India Limited’s pivotal role in advancing sustainable solutions and supporting India’s clean energy transition.
