Roorkee is virtually in the doghouse these days. As dogs become aggressive in Roorkee, a sharp spike in canine bite cases has been reported in the city and surrounding areas.
A record 56 dog bite cases were reported in a single day in Roorkee town in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand on Friday, doctors said. Such dog bite cases are not new in Roorkee. Nearly 70-90 cases of dog bites came to the civil hospital Roorkee on several days last year. In some months nearly 1000-2000 dog bite cases are reported in Roorkee hospitals.
This has led to a scare in Roorkee where people are finding it difficult to walk on the street. As the dog bite cases are increasing, the government hospitals in the town have sought more rabies injections, local media reports claimed.
According to a report of the Union Health and Family Welfare, nearly 3.05 million cases of dog bites were reported during 2023 leading to death of 286 persons. The trend is continuing, doctors said.
India has the highest number of attacks by stray dogs which cause 36 percent of rabies deaths in the world.
