The state-run power producer SJVN ltd might not have earned any laurel when its drilling at Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand was stopped midway after the trapped 41 workers were rescued with the help of the rat hole mining technique on Tuesday.

But approximately 90 km away from Silkyara in the same district, the company achieved a major landmark in the tough Himalayan geological conditions of Naitwar-Mori area where it commissioned both the two units of 60 Mw Naitwar-Mori hydel project. The first 30 Mw unit was commissioned on Friday last and the second 30 Mw unit on Thursday.

This achievement of SJVN came at a time when the hydropower sector in the hill state is in doldrums especially after the Kedarnath deluge which brought heavy destruction leaving over 5000 people dead in June 2013.

The 30 Mw unit has achieved the commercial operation date (COD) of Nov 24 after going through rigorous testing and successful synchronization with national grid, the company officials said. With this achievement, the company has now furthered its total generation capacity to 2,122 MW from 2,091.50 MW. The Company has commenced the commercial energy generation from the Naitwar-Mori run-of-the-river project on river Tons, a tributary of Yamuna.

“The construction period included torrid times of pandemic which affected almost every aspect of project development, still our dedication and hard work has resulted in completion of project in just over five years in geologically unpredictable and tough Himalayan conditions. The construction of project included excavation and lining of a 4.33 kilometre long Head Race Tunnel with diameter of 5.6 meters.” said Nand Lal Sharma CMD SJVN

The project has been completed within a time period of six years from the award of the civil works in 2017. The Second Unit (30 Mw) of the project was also commissioned on Thursday.

The project will generate 265.5 million units of electricity annually and the power will be evacuated through 37 km long 220 KV Transmission Line from Bainol to Snail.

SJVN is a diversified transnational CPSE with business interest in Hydro, Solar, Wind and Thermal Power Generation, Power Transmission and Power Trading. The Company has a presence across India and in Nepal and is continuously moving forward to reach its Mission of 12,000 MW installed capacity by 2026 and Shared Vision of 50,000 MW by 2040. Ends
