The Uttarakhand police on Tuesday said they have rounded up 50 suspects after some tension between shopkeepers belonging two communities at Paltan Bazar in Dehradun.

The tension mounted on Monday after a group of people tried to put pressure on the state administration to secure release of one Umer, a native of Bijnor, who allegedly molested a young girl who had gone to his shop to purchase a pair of sandals.

After the alleged molestation, a large number of people gathered at the Paltan Bazar Kotwali and sought stern action against the culprit. Buckling under pressure, police on Monday arrested Umer and later remanded him to judicial custody.

But after hearing that Umer has been arrested, a group of shopkeepers closed their shops and sought his release. On the other hand, a large number of shopkeepers belonging to different communities asked the police to provide security to them and weed out anti-social elements from Paltan Bazar.

On the intervention of SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh, the clam was restored in Paltan Bazar. “It is almost normal today. All shop are opened,” said a shopkeeper.

A verification campaign was launched by the state police in Paltan Bazar during which nearly 50 suspects were rounded up, police said.
