The Uttarkhand police on Sunday said a special investigation team (SIT) has been set up to probe the death of Amrita Rawat (18) in a resort in Uttarkashi district following the resentment among the villagers.
On the other hand, the family members held the last rites of Rawat on the banks of river Bhagirathi after the assurance from police for an independent probe. After the last rites, grief was prevailing in Rawat’s Bhamkoli and nearby villages.
When contacted, Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police (SP) Arpan Yaduvanshi said the SIT was formed to probe the death of Rawat, whose body was found hanging in Kaflon Basics resort. An FIR has also been lodged in this regard.
However, the SP said no arrest has been made so far in connection with the death. Earlier, two persons, including Anil Kuriyal owner of the resort were picked up for questioning. Villagers claimed that since the owners of the resort were influential people, attempts were being made to show the death due to suicide.
The move to set up SIT came after scores of villagers gathered outside the Uttarakashi district hospital on Saturday where a postmortem of Rawat (18) of Bhamkoli village was conducted following which the body was kept in the mortuary. The villagers initially had refused to take back the body alleging that the girl was murdered in the resort. “In the postmortem the death was shown due to choking. But the scene at the resort where the body was found was different. Hence, we want second postmortem of the body,” said Chatar Singh Rana, an uncle of Rawat.
“Our daughter was not under any kind of stress and she was a normal human being. So there is no reason why our child should end her life in the resort,” Rana said.
Rawat’s body was found hanging on Friday in the resort following which her family members rushed to there after getting a phone call. When they reached there, they saw Rawat’s body was hanging from a room and her feet were almost touching ground. They soon started suspecting some foul play.
Last year, Ankita Bhandari, a young receptionist, was allegedly murdered by Pulkit Arya, the owner, at a resort where she was working near Rishikesh. Ends
