Top seed Jannik Sinner on Sunday showed his supremacy at Melbourne Park as he won his second consecutive Australian Open title defeating No 2 Alexander Zverev of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
After reaching his first Grand Slam final, Zverev’s dream of winning his first big title remained unfulfilled largely due to the better display of tennis by Sinner, whose fastest serve was at 207 km/h speed.
Sinner (23), who also won US Open title last year, executed some excellent shots to show why he is no 1 in the world. The main difference between the two top ranked players was that Sinner made less unforced errors. The Italian also didn’t struggle much on his own serves. A year after overhauling Daniil Medvedev in five sets in the 2024 Australian Open final, Sinner became the second player after Novak Djokovic and third after Roger Federer to defend the title in the past one decade. Sinner became the 11th man in the professional era to win back-to-back titles.
Having won the US Open last year, Sinner became the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles moving past his tie with Nicola Pietrangeli, a back-to-back winner of the men’s singles at French Open in 1959 and 1960.
Sinner broke Zverev’s serve at 4-3 to take 5-3 lead in the first set. He dominated the game to take the first set 6-3 with relative ease.
In the second set, Sinner made some beautiful drop shots to flummox the German. Both the players however didn’t give any chance to each other to break serves. After showing some wonderful tennis, the two players locked themselves in the tie-break. Sinner took three consecutive points to take the second set 7-6.
In the third set, Sinner broke Zverev’s serve at 3-2 to move towards straight three sets victory. He grabbed the Championship point without any much struggle by taking the third set 6-3.
