In a stunning display of great tennis, third seed Daniil Madvedev came from behind after two sets down to defeat sixth seed Alexender Zverev in the semi final match of the Australian Open on Friday.
Medvedev (Russia) defeated Zverev (Germany) 5-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted more than four hours in the Rod Laver arena in Melbourne. Interestingly, Medvedev had lost the final match to Rafael Nadal despite winning the first two sets in 2022 in the Australian Open.
Medvedev will now meet Italy’s Jannik Sinner who dethroned reigning champion and top seed Novak Djokovic (36) in other semi-final earlier in the day.
Fourth seed Sinner (22) entered his first grand slam final after beating the Serbian tennis great 6-1, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. The match ended Djokovic’s bid to win his 25th grand slam title to get past Margaret Court. Sinner will now play third seed Daniil Madvadev (Russia) or Alexender Zverev (Germany) in the final clash on Sunday.
Sinner, who is great form these days, played some superb shots and Djokovic could not match his opponent’s speed and agility. After winning the third set in tie-break, Djokovic might have hoped to win the match but soon he lost steam in the fourth set and thus the match.
Since 2015, the Australian Open title is shared by top three tennis stars – Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. This will be the first time that the Australian Open will see a new champion in 2024.
