Italian top seed Jannik Sinner (23) outclassed American 12th seed Taylor Fritz 6-3,6-4,7-5 to clinch his first US Open title on Sunday at Flushing Meadows.
Sinner is the first Italian to win the US Open title as he dominated the game most of the time in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium despite repeated rants “USA” by the crowd to pep Fritz (26) up.
Sinner was under scanner at the start of the US Open amid revelations that he took anabolic agent in March. However, an independent tribunal accepted his claim that the positive tests were the results of an unintentional contamination.
Novak Djokovic’s early exit in the tournament has made the US Open this year without a Grand Slam title for the Big three who dominated the tennis game since 2003 when Roger Federer won his first Wimbledon title.
After winning the title, tearful Sinner dedicated his US Open title to his aunt who he revealed is battling serious ill health. “I don’t know how much longer I will have her in my life,” he said with tears in his eyes.
This was the second Grand Slam title won by Sinner who early this year won the Australian Open also. He is the fourth player to win both the Australian Open and US Open in one year.
On the way to the final, Sinner (23) defeated Briton Jack Draper 7-5,7-6,6-2 in the semi final. After suffering the wrist injury in the second set with a medical timeout, the Italian overcame the challenge of Draper, who was also not feeling well due to vomiting and excessive heat.
Fritz in the second semi-final had defeated Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a five set long match. This was the first time that Fritz has entered the US Open final. In all the previous Grand Slam matches, Fritz has never gone beyond the quarter-final stage.
