Russia’s Daniil Medvedev lost his second Australian Open final in two years as Italy’s Jannik Sinner emerged as the new champion at the Melbourne Park on Sunday.
Coming from behind after two sets down, fourth seed Sinner produced some excellent shots laced with 14 aces to defeat third seed Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in what appeared to be a repeat of the Friday’s semi final match where the latter had demolished Germany’s Alexender Zverev in a five set thriller. This was Sinner’s maiden grand slam title.
Interestingly, Medvedev had lost the Australian Open final match to Rafael Nadal despite winning the first two sets in 2022 also. Medvedev is the first person in the grand slam history to lose two finals after winning the first two sets.
Fourth seed Sinner (22) entered his first grand slam final after beating the tennis great Novak Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3.
Sinner, who is great form these days, played some superb shots. However, Medvedev looked tired after winning the first two sets. In the last three sets, Sinner was in full command.
Since 2015, the Australian Open title is shared by top three tennis stars – Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. This was the first time that the Australian Open saw a new champion in 2024.
