The authorities in Uttarakhand on Thursday decided to close all schools in Dehradun and some other districts for the second consecutive day on Friday after the met department issued red alert for heavy rains that lashed most parts of the hill state.

Dehradun was experiencing intermittent rains since early morning on Thursday even as the district authorities closed all schools as precautionary measure due to the met office’s warning of red alert.

The hilly areas of Garhwal and Kumaon were also experiencing rains since morning.

The higher reaches of Garhwal experienced the first snowfall of the season. “We have received information that the higher reaches (above 5000 meter) of Uttarakhand have received snowfall,” said Rohit Thapliyal, scientist at Dehradun Met centre.

The government claimed that the main national highways including Rishikesh-Badrinath road were opened for traffic.

However, most of the rivers including Ganga were flowing well below danger mark at various places including Haridwar.
