Robbery at Jewellery showrooms: First it was President, now VP

When the robbery at Reliance Jewels took place on Nov 9 last year, it was the day when President Droupadi Murmu was on a trip to Dehradun on the occasion of Uttarakhand’s formation day.

Months later, a group of armed men robbed Balaji Jewellers in Haridwar at a time when Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar was on two days visit to Dehradun and Rishkesh.

And when the robbery at Balaji Jewellers took place, Dhankar was addressing medical students and doctors at few kms away in AIIMS Rikshikesh in the afternoon.

“What a coincidence!” exclaimed Dr Vinod Sharma, a retired top ONGC official. In both the cases, either it was the President who was visiting Dehradun or Vice President, he said.

“What can I say? It shows there are some loopholes in our security system,” said a top police official.

In case of Reliance Jewels, jewellery worth Rs 15 crore was looted by gunmen. In the Balalji Jewellers heist, gold and ornaments worth Rs 5 crore were robbed.
