Rekha Gupta: BJP again picks new face in Delhi

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was lucky in a way that the BJP high command reposed faith in him once more in Maharashtra in December. Elsewhere, other top leaders in BJP were not so lucky.

Remember what happened when Vasundhra Raje was asked to announce the name of new CM in Rajasthan. In a similar fashion, BJP brought many new faces in several other states.

And now after days of suspense, the BJP again sprang a surprise by picking up first time MLA Rekha Gupta for the post of Chief Minister of Delhi on Wednesday. “This is not the first time that the BJP had given such political shocks”, says a BJP observer. This also gave credence to a new notion that in the BJP’s scheme of things, any MLA can become the top boss of her or his state provided the high command likes the face.

In 2017, when BJP won the assembly elections in Uttarakhand, everybody was astounded when Trivendra Singh Rawat’s name figured in the list of probable CM. After Rawat was ousted, Tirath Singh Rawat was another unexpected choice. And within months when the second Rawat was removed, nobody had thought about Pushkar Singh Dhami. “There is respect for small workers of which I am a living example,” Dhami had stated after becoming the CM.

“I like BJP for respecting its leaders irrespective of their stature in the party,” said Manju Rautela, a Dehradun-based teacher.

  1. Selection of Rekha Gupta for the post of CM of Delhi is no surprise, if we the history of BJP policies. BJP wants new blood, especially young people on the top position. Generally these people don’t have any black history behind them. Clean candidates with loyalty to RSS and BJP are the key criteria for selection of top leadership.
