Hours after recording the highest minimum temperature of 24.4 degree C this season, rains accompanied by cool winds on Saturday lashed Dehradun and Mussoorie bringing much-needed relief to the people.

Besides Dehradun and Mussoorie, some other parts of Uttarakhand also experienced rains, Met department said.

Interestingly, forest officials are hoping that there should be widespread rains in the hill state to effectively control the raging forest fires. The forest fires have aggravated in Nainital and other parts of the Kumaon region in the past few days.

Dehradun on Friday recorded the highest temperature of 38 degree C of the summer season which was 3.5 degree more than the normal. The minimum temperature also rose to 24.4 degree on Saturday which was the highest of the season and 4.8 more than the normal.

As the weather remained dry for a longer period in Uttarakhand, the forest fires have also started raging in various parts of the state in the past one month. However, forest officials said rains may give some temporary relief in extinguishing these fires. “If we have widespread rains, it will extinguish the forest fires completely,” said a to forest official.

Significantly, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) had issued advisory to the people of the possible heat wave in the coming days in the state. The sources said the USDMA’s advisory came because of some miscommunication with the state met department’s prediction of light rains. “We have predicted light rains in Garhwal region,” said Bikram Singh, head of the Met Department.
