The Uttarakhand police on Thursday night swung into action to defuse tension after irate mobs pelted stones outside the Dehradun Railway Station amid reports that a young girl from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh was roaming with a boy from different community there.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Ajai Singh along with the police force rushed to the spot and immediately controlled the situation thereby averting a major clash.

The SSP said the incident took place late Thursday night when Ajay Singh, a resident of Dataganj area of Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh, and a 16-year-old girl belonging to another community living in the same area were spotted roaming at the railway station.

On finding the matter suspicious, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) brought the couple to their office. On contacting the girl’s family, it was found that she had left a day earlier without informing them. It was also found that the girl’s family has lodged a missing report in the Badaun police station.

The SSP said that as soon as it was known that the boy and the girl belonged to different communities, a crowd gathered at the railway station and during which some unruly people tried to disturb communal harmony and started pelting stones on parked vehicles.

A number of vehicles were damaged in the stone pelting incidents. However, the timely intervention of the police averted a major clash, the SSP said.

Singh said cases have been registered against some unidentified people in the Nagar Kotwali.

He said that the police is trying to identify the people involved in the incident through CCTV footage and videos.

  1. Thanks to Dehradun police that situation has been controlled with in shortest time. But this situation is a future alarm for communal riotes in so far peaceful city of Dehradun. Changing demographic conditions in Uttrakhand are not under control. All outskirts of Dehradun is populated by people who are not even citizens of India.
Strict vigilance is required for outsiders settling in Uttrakhand.
