Police chowki starts functioning in demolition area: SSP

A police chowki on Tuesday started functioning in the Malik-Ka-Bagicha area where two religious structures were demolished after widespread violence broke out in Banbhulpura area of Haldwani in Nainital district on Feb 8.

In continuation of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s announcement of opening a police station in Banbhulpura where the religious structures were demolished, SSP Prahalad Meena said the police chowki has started functioning there. A sub-inspector, some constables and PAC personnel have been stationed in the chowki to keep a vigil in the area. Dhami had made this announcement on Monday in Haridwar.

The Uttarkahand police have arrested six more rioters on Tuesday as the curfew in Banbhulpura area of Haldwani continued with some special relaxation to buy the essential commodities. With the death of one more person, the total number of deaths in the Haldwani violence has now gone up to six.

SSP Meena said six more people in connection with the Thursday riots were arrested. Two illegal pistols, six live cartridges were also recovered from these six persons. With this, the total number of arrests has gone up to 36. Three FIRs were registered in relation to the Thursday violence, he said.

After the cancellation of 127 arms licences, the police have seized 41 pistols in the area. “There were some firing incidents also on Thursday. We want to know from which weapon this firing took place,” the SSP said.

Earlier, the Nainital district administration has decided to cancel nearly 127 arms licences in Haldwani areas in view of Thursday’s violence. The violence flared up after the two illegal religious structures were demolished under the court’s orders.
