Mithun to get Dadasaheb Phalke Award, says he is extremely happy (updating)

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, whose long struggle in Bollywood became an inspiring story, on Monday was chosen for this year’s Dadasaheb Phalke award for his contribution to the Indian cinema.

Chakraoborty (74), who is remembered for his stellar roles in movies like Mrigya, Disco Dancer, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Ghulami, Prem Pritigya, Dalaal and others, said he is extremely happy. “I don’t have language (words). Neither I can laugh, nor cry. I couldn’t have imagined this. I am extremely happy. I dedicate this award to my family and my fans across the world,” he said.

The veteran actor who previously won three national awards has experienced a remarkable journey in Bollywood starting from his days of struggle when he used to sleep on footpaths and even go hunger searching for jobs.  He even said that he had endured the days of rejection and disrespect in the industry many times.

Announcing the award, Union Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said he was feeling honoured to announce this award for Mithun Da (74) for his remarkable cinematic journey which has inspired generations.

Writing on X, Vaishnaw said Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor Chakraborty for his iconic contribution to Indian cinema.

Chakraborty is remembered for 19 movies releases as lead actor in the year 1989, a record which is still unbroken in Bollywood.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Chakrabarty saying he is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty  Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him,” the PM wrote on X.
