Media persons demand withdrawal of FIR against journalist

The Uttarakhand police has filed an FIR against Manmeet Rawat, a journalist, for what it claimed “wrong reporting” on alleged deaths during the Chardham yatra, a move that left the media fraternity in a state of shock.

The FIR came after the warning by the state administration to remain careful on reporting anything on the Chardham yatra. The opposition leaders including former Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Uttarakhand Congress senior vice president Suryakant Dhasmana have condemned the government for lodging FIR against the journalist.

A delegation of media persons on Thursday met DGP Abhinav Kumar and called for withdrawal of an FIR immediately against Rawat, who works for Dainik Bhaskar and claimed that the journalist community in the state is being harassed.

The delegation headed by senior journalists Navin Thaledi and Bhupendra Kandari, later claimed that the DGP has given them some positive assurance on the withdraw of the FIR against Rawat after the elections. However, a police statement later said the DGP assured the delegation of an impartial action on the issue.
