A decades-old mazar in the Government Doon hospital in Dehradun was demolished on Friday night following an investigation carried out by the district administration on a complaint.
The demolition drive which began around the midnight continued for nearly 2-3 hours before the entire structure was removed, officials said.
Some local people and patients coming to the Doon hospital used to offer prayers at the mazar, the ownership of which was not known.
However, Uttarakhand Congress Vice President Suryakant Dhasmana claimed that the property belongs to the Waqf Board.
Pankaj Gupta, who was the complainant, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pushkar SIngh Dhami.
After the investigations carried out by the district administration, the mazar was demolished by a bulldozer amid tight security arrangements. The administration claimed that the mazar was illegally built on the hospital land.
Meanwhile, state BJP has welcomed the demolition of the mazar saying the Dhami government was committed to act against illegal madrasas, illegal mazars and land jihad.
