The leakage inside the Taj Mahal, a world heritage site, in Agra has been stopped after some preventive measures, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Thursday.

Videos of the submerged garden within the premises of the iconic 17th century mausoleum built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz, had gone viral on social media following the incessant monsoon rains in September.

In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, the Minister said this year, there was continuous rainfall for more than three days from September 10 to 12 in Agra region. Due to this heavy rainfall, few water droplets were noticed on the ceiling of Taj Mahal. However, no serious leakage, cracks and damages were noticed, the Minister said adding the water penetrated through the minor joints.

After detailed inspection using LiDAR and Thermal Scanning preventive measures were taken immediately by sealing the joints and gaps to stop water penetrations to stop the leakage.
