Barely five months after six youths including three girls were killed in a high speed car crash, another joy ride in Dehradun turned tragic on Wednesday night when a speeding Mercedes mowed down four people.

The Uttarakhand police on Thursday arrested 22 year old Vansh Katyal who was driving the Mercedes involved in the hit and run case where four labourers from Uttar Pradesh were killed instantly and two injured. Katyal sped off from the scene after the accident.

The two injured persons are out of danger. The silver grey coloured Mercedes was found parked at Sahastradhara Road in the city on Thursday morning, police said. The front side of the car bearing a Chandigarh registration no was damaged

Katyal (22) was driving the Mercedes of his sister’s husband. Katyal’s 11 year old nephew was also sitting inside the vehicle when the accident occurred. The two were coming home after a joy ride, SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh said. The Mercedes was in speed and Katyal apparently lost control as he hit the scooty first before knocking down the four labourers.

The four victims who lost their lives have been identified Mansharam (30) and Ranjit (35) from Ayodhya, Balkaran (40) from Barabanki and Durgesh from Faizabad. All the four were working as labourers in Dehradun.
In a previous tragic accident in November last, six people including three boys and three girls were killed and one injured when their speeding car rammed into a container at ONGC Chowk in Dehradun city. The accident was so horrific that all the six youths, hailing from Dehradun, died on the spot and the car was reduced to a mangled heap.
