The Uttarakhand police on Saturday busted an illegal call centre in Dehradun for cheating foreigners under the pretext of removing virus bugs.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Ajai Singh had received confidential information about the operation of an illegal international call center in Riddhim Tower, located near Mahant Indresh Hospital in Patel Nagar area. The call centre workers were cheating foreigners by claiming that they were experts in removing virus bugs from their computers.
The SSP formed a joint team of SOG and Patel Nagar Police to investigate and take necessary action. When the team raided the call centre, it found that some young men and women were using laptops and computers in a big hall wearing headphones. They were posing as representatives of Microsoft Online Support Company and were allegedly removing viruses/bugs from computers of foreigners. In the process, they were also obtaining information about their bank accounts.
When interrogated, the call centre workers said that they all work for persons named Vivek and Nikita. Through the call centre, the workers would change their name and call themselves representatives of the company and talk to people. On getting information from foreign customers about problems related to viruses and hacking in their computer systems to remove the viruses, the workers used to gain access to the system of foreigners by using UltraViewer software and cheat them by taking payment in gift cards and crypto currency by promising to fix the virus sent by them earlier.
In return, these workers used to get a good salary every month and those for whom they work also get good monetary gains.
The call center operators Vivek Kumar (Noida) and Nikita Kumari (West Bengal) were arrested from the spot by the police team and notices under 41 of the CRPC were given to 15 people (7 men and 8 women) working in the call center.
From the spot, the police team recovered 14 laptops with chargers and headphones, 07 mobile phones, equipment related to broadband connection and 7 scripts which were being used in fraud.
A case under IPC 321/24 Section 75/66C/66D IT Act and 120B/420 IPC was registered against the accused at Kotwali Patel Nagar. The accused will be presented before a designated court shortly.
