Amid the growing traffic chaos in Dehradun, a group of students have come forward to wake the Uttarakhand government from the slumber through an insightful report.
Hopetown Girls’ School students Ahana Gupta, Akshma and Arwa H. Wani in collaboration with Dehradun based environmental action and advocacy group, Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation submitted a detailed report titled “Dehradun’s Traffic Situation: A growing concern” to District Magistrate (DM) Dehradun Savin Bansel and Superintendent of Police (SP) Traffic Mahesh Thakur.
The report is based on research, collaboration and analysis by the students under the guidance of their teacher.
The report addresses critical city centric traffic challenges such as rampant congestion, causes of increasing traffic load and its impacts on the environment and mental well-being of citizens. The report also discusses initiatives taken by the students of Hopetown Girls’ School to provide forums to discuss these issues and provides a comprehensive list of potential solutions and actionable strategies as seen from a youth centric lens.
Speaking on this initiative, Maya Norula, Principal of Hopetown Girls’ School said, “This initiative highlights our commitment to fostering responsible citizenship and empowering students to engage in meaningful dialogues about societal challenges. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.”
Anoop Nautiyal, founder of SDC Foundation said, “It is important for the youth to be encouraged, engaged and supported in social action so that they take responsibility for these pertinent issues”.
Both Savin Bansal and Mahesh Thakur, who received the reports, appreciated the students and their efforts, saying, It is encouraging to see young minds engaging so deeply with pressing issues. This report provides valuable perspectives that we will consider in our ongoing policy discussions. The students also shared their varied experiences while working on the project, emphasising the importance of teamwork, research skills, and civic engagement.
Hopetown Girls’ School and the SDC Foundation have committed to collaborate on similar city centric initiatives that bridge academics with real-world impact, preparing students to become informed, active contributors to society.
