Amid reports that the central government was planning to sell six of its loss-making airports, the Congress party has slammed the move claiming a total of 33 new airports may be handed over to the Adani Group.
“Will Mr Adani’s lottery open again? Preparations are on to hand over 33 emerging #airports of the country to private hands and these private hands will be that of Adani’s. The airports built with public money are being handed over to private hands. Blessed India, you are silent and unfortunately our emerging airport Dehradun is also among these airports. Dehradun airport was not named after Adi Guru Shankaracharya ji, but yes now it will be known by a new name Adani Airport,” senior Congress leader and former chief minister Harish Rawat said on the social media.
Several media reports have splashed stories claiming that airports may be sold through a package scheme. For example, airports like Kushinagar and Gaya may be bundled with commercially successful airport Varanasi to make the package attractive as part of the move to sell six airports. The airport sales are part of the central government’s move to raise Rs 47,000 lakh crore from offloading the state assets in the financial year 25-26.
