Heavy rains in and around Dehradun in Uttarakhand early on Wednesday inundated several low lying residential areas around Ripana river.

However, no loss of life and property was reported, officials said. Nearly 100 mm of rains was recorded in a span of 2-3 hours in some areas around Dehradun and Mussoorie, said Bikram Singh, Director Met office Dehradun.

“The Rispana river was overflowing due to heavy rains early on Wednesday due to which water entered several localities like Vani Vihar, Bhagat Singh Colony, Mohini Road and Balbir Road,” said Rajkumar, former Congress MLA, who lives near Rispana river.

Several people said they sought refuge either on their first floors or remained busy in cleaning the ground floors which filled with muddy waters. “Everywhere there is muddy water in and around Bhagat Singh Colony and other nearby areas,” said Alam, a contractor.

Environmentalists said people have constructed their homes by encroaching the floodplains of Rispana due to which the water enter residential colonies whenever the river overflows its embankments. The successive governments have so far failed to take any remedial measures on the issue.
