Fern leaf fossil found in Dehradun

IFS officer and Chief Forest Conservator Manoj Chandran recently stumbled upon a fern fossil which is believed to be 40 crore years old In Dehradun district.

The original size of the fern leaf is understood to be 40 cm in width and one meter long and is related to the Mussoorie limestone formation period which is 40 to 60 crore year old, Chandran said. He stumbled upon this fossil during trekking at Rajpur area near the Rispana river in Dehradun.

“The significance of this fossil is that it can give us the idea what kind of vegetation existed in this area during that time,” Chandran said.

He said he would ask the scientists of the Dehradun-based Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology to investigate the imprint of the fern leaf further. “The other details will be known only after proper investigations,” he said.
