The curriculum offered by universities must be designed according to the needs of industries and the corporate world, an expert said on Wednesday.
Prof P Purushotham Rao, the former president of the Indian Commerce Association and former professor of Osmania University, pointed out that if students do not receive education and training aligned with industry needs, they may fall behind in the competitive world. Prof Rao was speaking while inaugurating the one-day workshop on Emerging Dimensions of Higher Education organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Doon University.
“Even if they (students) secure jobs, they will require further technical training, for which companies conduct various training programs from time to time, incurring significant expenses. After receiving training, these employees often seek better opportunities and move from one company to another,” he said.
Therefore, educational institutions have the responsibility to develop curricula according to industry requirements and train students accordingly, he said. This will not only improve the work culture within industries but also allow companies to invest their training expenditures in societal development, Prof Rao said.
Prof. Rao added that while this task is not easy, it is not impossible either. “Teachers need to maintain regular communication with industries, involve them in curriculum design, lectures, workshops, and seminars to bridge the gap between academia and industry, thus preparing students in line with the changing times,” he said.
Presiding over the program, Vice-Chancellor of Doon University, Prof. Surekha Dagwal, stated that the university is steadily advancing towards excellence in quality. “Our teachers and students are achieving new milestones daily. Our aim is to establish the university as a center of learning for the aspirations of the state’s people, and we are continuously striving in this direction,” she said.
“In a short span, Doon University has made a distinctive mark in the field of education and research through various innovations in higher education. As a result, many of our teachers have succeeded in being listed among the world’s top two percent of scientists,” she said.
This year, Dr. Sudhanshu Joshi from the School of Management has also secured a place in the top two percent of scientists, which is a significant achievement for Doon university.
The program was conducted by the Director of the IQAC, Prof. H.C. Purohit. The guests were welcomed and thanked by Prof. Reena Singh.
