The Uttarakhand Congress has decided to send a letter signed by five lakh women on cases related to heinous crimes against females like sexual harassment, rapes, murders and dowry deaths in the hill state.
“Women are feeling insecure because in many cases the criminals are allegedly associated with the ruling BJP due to which cases are not being registered,” the party’s senior vice president Suryakant Dhasmana said in a statement. The alleged police inaction has resulted in spurt of crimes against women across the state, he said.
Dhasmana said as part of the ongoing agitation on the issue, the party would compile cases of heinous crimes against women and prepare a letter which will be sent to President Droupadi Murmu by getting signed by five lakh daughters, sisters and mothers. A copy of this letter will also be sent to the Vice President, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister of the country.
Dhasmana said that the Congress wants the President to understand the pain of women and direct the state government to provide safety to women.
When the President takes cognizance of the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, she should also show sensitivity towards similar heinous crimes like Ankita Bhandari murder in Uttarakhand, Dhasmana said.
In the Ankita Bhandari case, the alleged involvement of a VIP has not been unearthed so far, he said. He demanded a CBI inquiry into the involvement of this VIP in this case.
Dhasmana said that the Congress will soon place the draft of the letter to be sent to the President before the public.
