On an appeal made by Rahul Gandhi, the Uttarakhand Congress on Friday suspended its march against the construction of a replica of Kedaranth shrine in Delhi following heavy landslides and floods in the shrine area.
On the 10th day of the Kedarnath yatra which reached Sitapur in Rudraprayag district, the march was suspended in view of the natural disasters striking Kedarnath area. The decision came after an appeal was made by the leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi, the state party vice president Suryakant Dhasmana said. Gandhi has also asked the party workers to participate in the relief and rescue works at Kedarnath area.
Uttarakhand Congress under the leadership of PCC chief Karan Mahara began a march on July 24 from the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand on the issue of construction of a Kedarnath replica in New Delhi, a move decried by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Led by state party Mahara, a host of senior party leaders including the leader of the opposition Yashpal Arya and former chief miniter Harish Rawat had participated in the march.
“The main aim of the yatra from Haridwar to Kedarnath is to safeguard the interests of Uttarakhand as far as Kedarnath shrine is concerned,” said Dhasmana.
Congress has been vehemently opposing the proposed construction of a replica of Kedarnath at Burari in Delhi ever since Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the foundation stone laying ceremony held in the national capital earlier this month.
Mahara has alleged that BJP leaders and Chief Minister Dhami are continuously violating the sacred traditions and sanctity of Baba Kedarnath Dham. To “expose the lies and hypocrisy” of the Chief Minister along with the BJP and to maintain the sanctity of Shri Kedarnath temple, the State Congress has organized Shri Kedarnath Dham Pratishtha Raksha Yatra, Mahara said.
