The Uttarakhand police on Wednesday arrested two brothers from Najibabad area in Uttar Pradesh after they allegedly abducted a local girl in Kiritinagar town of Tehri district that had created considerable communal tension.
The girl is also being brought back, police said.
The two brothers have been identified as Salman and his brother Shan who had allegedly abducted the girl. Salman was running a barber shop in Kirtinagar. One more person identified as Rakesh Bhat has also been arrested, a top police official said.
Angry over the disappearance of the teenage girl, the local people on Tuesday ransacked some shops belonging to a particular community in the market demanding the immediate arrest of the alleged abductors.
Locals were suspecting religious conversion and love jihad in the case. Police said that they have registered a case and started searching for the missing teenager from late Monday night.
The locals kept protesting in Kirtinagar market area since Tuesday morning asking police to find the teenager and take action against some people of a particular community.
The local people also took out a rally in Kirtinagar main market area.
The local BJP leaders alleged that the police did not take any action despite repeated reminders. They said that the accused barber was missing since the abduction took place.
Tehri’s Additional Superintendent of Police J R Joshi said that a case has been registered against Salman and Shan, residents of Najibabad in Bijnor district under the Uttarakhand Religious Freedom Act and the POCSO Act.
Uttrakhand government should strictly ban entry of outsiders. Slowly Uttrakhand is becoming next Jammu and Kashmir. Local people will be thrown out by force in near future.
People should keep watch in their neighborhood what is going on. In the name of love jihad such incidents will repeat again if strict vigilance is not kept
