After days of silence, people on Wednesday started hearing hourly chimes of the clock tower, the main landmark of Dehradun.
In the last few days, the clock of the tower popularly referred to as “Ghanta Ghar” had stopped chiming after few wires were found missing in what appeared to be work of someone who keeps keys of the lock of the main gate of the clock tower.
The people on Monday noticed that the clock was not working. Some shopkeepers informed the Nagar Nigam officials, who are responsible for the maintenance of the clock tower. Nagar Nigam officials filed an FIR in this regard.
Since Tuesday, the repair work began and the clock again started working on Wednesday, officials said.
After hearing the report concerning the clock tower, SSP Dheradun sent Dhara police chowki incharge Harsh Arora to lines for alleged negligence of duty. But after the police investigations, it was found that there was no negligence on the part of police and it was work of someone inside the Nagar Nigam.
The police has now asked the Nagar Nigam to investigate the matter on its own. Meanwhile, Arora has been recalled for duty at Dhara Chowki.
Chiming of clocks of Ghanta Ghar of Dehradun is proud of Dehradun. If I remember very well, this is the only clock tower in North India which chimes. Thanks to ONGC for its restoration and putting it in working condition.
