BJP’s performance in the general elections may not be on expected lines. But in the eastern coastal state of Odisha, it has done unexpectedly well in the just concluded assembly elections.

The trends indicated that the saffron party is likely to share government with its ally in Andhra Pradesh where assembly elections were also held.

BJP on Tuesday was all set to create new history as it was about to capture power for the first time in Odisha. BJP was leading in 80 seats in Odisha far ahead of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (50) and Congress (15) in the 147 member House as the counting of votes was in progress, the election commission said. This will be the first time that BJP will form a government in Odisha after it shared power with BJD government in the 2000 assembly election.  Just before the 2009 assembly elections, BJD walked out of the NDA.

In Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, BJP along with its ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was leading in what appeared to be one-sided contest with Chandra Baba Naidu all set to become new Chief Minister. In the latest trends available with the Election Commission, TDP was leading in 133 seats while BJP was ahead in 8 seats in the 175 member House.  PM Modi congratulated Naidu for the emphatic victory in both assembly and general elections.
