Atishi to be new CM of Delhi (updating)

Cabinet Minister Atishi Marlena Singh (43) is going to be new Chief Minister of Delhi after Arvind Kejriwal, who is on interim bail, decided to quit in view of the corruption charges and certain bail conditions.

Atishi, who holds important portfolios of Education, Finance and PWD, would be the eighth Chief Minister of Delhi as a short gap arrangement. The decision to nominate Atishi as new CM came at a meeting of the AAP legislature Party at Kejriwal’s residence on Tuesday.

Atishi had assumed the central role in the party after the arrest of Kejriwal. She has gained confidence of both Kejriwal and his wife Sunita. Initially, Kejriwal wanted his wife to become CM but at the eleventh hour decided to handover the power to Atishi.

Kejriwal has made it clear that he would seek reelection to get the certificate of honesty from the people of Delhi. He has called for assembly elections in November.

Atishi is an MLA of AAP party from Kalakaji constituency in Delhi. She was inducted into the Delhi government as a cabinet minister along with Saurabh Bhardwaj after the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyender Jain.

Aitishi has done her MA from Oxford.

Later in the evening, Kejriwal handed over his resignation to Lt Governor V K Saxena.

While granting bail, the Supreme Court had imposed certain harsh conditions against Kejriwal that include barring him to visit the office of the Chief Minister.
