She fell in love with Kanha and became Meera! This is the story of Harishka Pant (21) who surprised everyone by getting married to Lord Krishna at her own will.

Harshika Pant, a native of Haldwani town in Kumaon region in Uttarakhand, took wows and walked seven sacred steps around the fire to become the modern Meera, the 16th century poetess and Lord Krishna’s ardent devotee, who also married Kanha.

On her wedding on Thursday, Pant, who was born with a congenital disability, wore a red coloured saree and vermilion on her head, went through all the rituals to become the wife of Kanha. Pant’s parents had fixed July 11 for the wedding with the consent of the family members. The barat of Lord Krihsna with the idol brought from Vrindavan, was given a pompous reception at the tastefully decorated gate. Later, Pant took all the wedding vows made her wife of Lord Krishna.

After the marriage, Pant started reciting Lord Krishna bhajans and got lost in the devotion, family members said.

This is not the first time that this kind of marriage has been solemnized in India. Shivani, a graduate in Gawlior, got married to Lord Krishna in April this year.

“We have heard many incidents where girls prefer their marriages to Lord Krishna in different parts of the country,” said an old-timer.
