After Reliance Jewels, yet another jewellery showroom looted in Haridwar

After the sensational Reliance Jewels heist in Dehradun, a group of armed men on Sunday made yet another daring daylight robbery in Haridwar city looting jewellery worth Rs 5 crore at gunpoint.

After the heist, the robbers whisked away with the booty as the nearby policemen who were on patrol failed to notice anything unusual in the shop.

The incident happened at the busy posh market Ranipur Morh where the armed men arrived at the showroom of Balaji Jewelers on two-wheelers and fled with jewelry and cash after spraying chili powder and firing two rounds. No one was injured in the firing.

The incident took place between 1 and 1.15 pm and was carried out by five robbers who came on a motorcycle and a scooty, police said. Out of these, three miscreants were wearing masks while the other two did not cover their faces.

According to the owner of the jewelry showroom, jewelry worth more than five crore rupees was looted.

The police have cordoned off the area and started search operation to nab the robbers.

Angry traders protested against the incident. However, top policemen assured the traders that the accused will be caught soon and the incident will be solved.

Haridwar Jewelers Association President Neeraj Gupta said that it is a matter of shame that armed miscreants looted the entire shop from a busy market of Haridwar city and the policemen posted at a distance of a few steps did not even get a clue of it. “This is very shameful. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami should take cognizance of the matter,” he said.

Gupta also alleged that on coming to know about the incident, he tried to inform the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), City Superintendent of Police and Police Circle Officer over the phone but no one picked up his call.

In a similar incident last year, armed robbers decamped with jewelry worth Rs 15 crore from the Reliance Jewels showroom at the fashionable Rajpur Road in Dehradun on Nov 9 at a time when President Droupadi Murmu was on a visit to the capital.

  1. What a coincidence. When Reliance jewelry heist was conducted in Dehradun, it was the day when Indian President Draupadi Murmu was on visit to Dehradun. Now Haridwar jewelry heist is done, it’s the visit of vice president of India.
This means both jewelry heist were well planned to coincide with visit of VIPs in Uttrakhand. At the time of visit of national leaders all police and para military forces are busy with security arrangements.
In future this point should be considered for not only providing security cover to VIPs but also to avoid such day light robberies.
