After Karpoori Thakur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced veteran BJP leader L K Advani (96) will be conferred the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award.

“I am happy to share that Shri L K Advani ji will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. I spoke to him and congratulated him on being conferred this honour. One of the most respected statesmen of our times, his contribution to the development of India’s is monumental. His is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister,” the Prime Minster wrote on the X (Twitter).

Advani, a co-founder of the ruling BJP, had led a country-wide campaign in 1990s for building the Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya. As part of the campaign, Advani started a rath yatra from Somnath temple in Gujarat which was halted in Bihar where he was arrested in Darbangah by the former Laloo Prasad Yadav government.

Advani is the longest serving leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and was the prime ministerial candidate of the NDA during the 2009 general elections.

Recently, late Karpoori Thakur, who served as Bihar chief minister twice, was also conferred the Bharat Ratna.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his happiness over the decision and said Advani is the top leader in the Indian politics. Advani is also the epitome of honesty and commitment in politics, Dhami said.
