Locals foil attempt to rob jewelry shop at Vikasnagar in Dehradun

An attempt to rob a jewelry shop was foiled by local people after they nabbed one of three Saharanpur-based gangsters at Vikashnagar area in Dehradun district last evening, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred when three armed gangsters tried to loot New Rana Jewelers shop in Vikasnagar last evening. As they tried to enter the shop, alert local people pounced upon them and nabbed one gangster identified as Navin Saini. Two other gangsters however managed to escape.
Soon, Ajai Singh SSP Dehradun rushed to the spot and instructed the police force to nab the other two gangsters by alerting all the nearby police chowkis. Amid frantic police checking at many places, the police spotted the duo at Asan Barrage area where they were asked to stop. But gangsters opened fire at the policemen. In the ensuing encounter, police fired back in which both the gangsters were injured. The duo received bullet injuries in their feet.
The two gangsters identified as Jehangir Ali and Saurabh Kashyap were taken to a nearby government hospital for treatment in the heavy police escort. Some arms including pistols have also been seized from them.
Police investigations revealed that the three gangsters were wanted by the Saharanpur police in several cases of robbery and other heinous crimes. They were also carrying a reward of Rs 25000 on their heads.
This is the first such incident in many years in Dehradun where locals foiled the robbery and nabbed an armed gangster who was having a country-made pistol, police officials said. “Yes I agree this is really commendable on the part of the locals to foil a robbery where gangsters were having pistols,” said Rajiv Saha SHO Vikasnagar. However, Saha said there had been some incidents in the past where locals foiled robbery attempts.
