Renowned Garhwali singer Narendra Singh Negi recently stated that he has put up an artificial nest for goriaya, the vanishing house sparrow, at his home.

“The goriya came and gave her eggs inside this nest and later flew away,” Negi said while speaking at an event in Dehradun. But when he checked, he said, he found some plastic also inside the nest. He was expressing concern over the growing use of plastic in the daily life.

Nevertheless, Negi’s anecdote also highlighted that he was also participating in the conservation of the little bird. Negi is not alone in this unique effort to protect the vanishing bird. Lots of people in India are now making a specialized place or putting up artificial nests in their homes for goriayas, which are also considered lucky charm for many.

As the world celebrates Goraiya day on March 20, environmentalists have called for more efforts to save this beautiful efforts from complete extinction.  The World Sparrow Day is observed to raise awareness about the growing threat to the population of the house sparrow especially in urban areas. In places like Delhi and other major cities, goraiyas are not seen these days.

In Dehradun, rampant urbanization and changing lifestyle are among the major reasons for the fast declining population of these birds.

“Everything is not yet lost. If we make little bit more efforts, we may be able to save this bird from complete extinction,” said Dehradun-based Vinod Sharma, who loves birds.
