A four-lane elevated corridor will be constructed on Rispana and Bindal rivers with a cost of Rs 6250 crore in Dehradun to reduce traffic pressure in the city and improve the infrastructure, an official statement said.
With Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami giving his nod for the project, a meeting was held at the Manthan Auditorium of the state Forest department headquarters in Dehradun on Tuesday regarding the construction of the elevated road.
In the meeting, the Public Works Department (PWD) officials gave a presentation of the proposed elevated corridor road and also took valuable suggestions from the public representatives. However, some environmentalist groups like Dehradun-based SDC Foundation and Dehradun Citizen Forum (DCF) said they were not invited.
During the meeting, Cabinet Minister Ganesh Joshi, MLA Vinod Chamoli, MLA Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’, MLA Savita Kapoor, MLA Brijbhushan Gairola, MLA Khajan Das, Dehradun Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal including District Magistrate Savin Bansal, Deputy District Magistrate Kumkum Joshi and senior PWD officials were present.
Joshi and MLAs from Dehradun held discussions on the construction of the new elevated corridor which they said was necessary to improve the vehicular traffic in Dehradun city and beautify the environment-friendly Rispana and Bindal rivers.
The MLAs also gave their valuable suggestions to overcome the problems arising out of the traffic congestions. The public representatives said that the drainage plan proposed under the master plan in Dehradun, the river front development plan, the displacement and service lanes should also be given special attention in this project.
For the successful implementation of the elevated project, a special purpose unit (SPV) should be formed and senior officials of MDDA, Dehradun Municipal Corporation, PWD and Revenue Department along with local councilors, urban development minister and local MLAs should be included in it.
They said the construction of the project should be completed on top priority basis.
District Magistrate Savin Bansal said that the feasibility study, alignment and draft DPR for the elevated corridor have been prepared by the concerned department.
Hydrological model study has been done by IIT Roorkee. Joint inspection of the departments has been done for shifting the electric lines, high tension lines, sewer lines and other utilities located inside the Rispana and Bindal rivers and the process of land acquisition is going on, Bansal said.
Chief Engineer of Public Works Department Ranjit Singh and Executive Engineer Jitendra Tripathi informed that an 11 km long four lane elevated corridor is proposed on Rispana river, with a cost of Rs 2500 crores. Its starting point is Rispana Setu (near Vidhan Sabha) and the end point is Nagal Bridge. Its interchange junctions are Sahasradhara Chowk and Dhoran-IT Park Road. The four lane Bindal elevated corridor is 15 km long which would cost Rs 3750 crores. Its starting point is Bindal Bridge (near Kargi Chowk) and the end point is Rajpur Road, near Sai Mandir. Its interchange junctions are Lal Pul Chowk, Bindal Tiraha, Vijay Colony and Mussoorie Diversion.
Good initiative. Other methods of reducing traffic congestion should also be worked out. Removal of electricity poles should be one of them. Many poles are in shabby condition, may cause safety issues. Widening of roads. Putting a ban on registration of new vehicles. Improving public transport system.
Removal of vip culture to give priority to vip vehicles over private vehicles. Let them also have a feel of road traffic.
