After its heroic operation in the dreadful Kedarnath deluge in 2013, the Indian army has again earned accolades by swiftly saving the lives of dozens of labourers who were trapped in the frightening Mana avalanche.
Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Central Command and Lt Gen D G Mishra GOC Uttar Bharat visited the avalanche site at Mana on Saturday to oversee and coordinate the ongoing search and rescue operation.
Specialized recco radars, UAVs, quadcopters, avalanche rescue dogs etc have been pressed into service to locate the survivors in the heavy snow.
The army said helicopters are also operating continuously for staging forward essential equipments, resources and evacuation of the injured.
The army Commander Sengupta assured that the men in olive green uniforms are fully equipped with the necessary resources to ensure fast paced rescue efforts.
In 2013, the army had taken over the entire rescue operation after the tsunami-like floods in Kedarnath under the supervision of the then Army Commander GOC-in-C Lt Gen Anil Chait. Hundreds of people, mostly pilgrims were rescued in one of the toughest operations by the army.
After the avalanche struck Mana area, the army personnel immediately swung into action as they rescued 10 workers in the morning itself. By the Friday evening, 33 workers have been rescued. And on Saturday, 17 more workers were brought out.
