Earthquakes again hit Tibet, no casualties reported

A day after devastating earthquake hit Tibet and bordering areas of Nepal, a series of tremors of moderate intensity again hit the southern plateau on Wednesday.

The latest tremor measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit Qinghai area in Tibet at 1319 hours on Wednesday.  Two more tremors struck Lobuche in Nepal in the morning. However, there was no report of any loss of life and property in the region. A large number of people have taken shelter in tents in the region fearing more earthquakes.

US geologists also said earthquakes are continuing in the Himalayan region since Tuesday.

Meanwhile, braving sub-zero cold, rescuers armed with searchlights and aided with sniffer dogs on Wednesday looked for people trapped inside the debris of flattened houses in the earthquake affected areas where scores of people have already been rescued even as the death toll stood at 126.

The rescuers are focusing on nearly 26 villages within a 20 km radius of the epicenter as they used hands and shovels to remove debris.

PLA soldiers have also joined the rescue operation, the reports said.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Tibet’s south-west areas on Tuesday morning triggering a series of aftershocks in the Himalayan and surrounding regions that left nearly 126 people dead and 188 others injured.

Chinese media put the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.8 and said the tremor jolted Dingri County in Xizang (Tibet) region. Over 3000 houses have also been damaged in the earthquake. The epicenter of the temblor was in Tsogo township of Dingri County administered by the city of Xigaze, the Chinese media said.

US geologists however said a strong earthquake of 7.1 magnitude was felt around 0635 hours in Tibet with a depth of 10 km.
