UPCL taking strict steps to curb power thefts

The Uttarkhand Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) has started taking strict steps to stop power theft in the hill state.

The vigilance unit of the discom is adopting a tough stance and raids are being conducted continuously thereby cases of power theft (Section-135) along with temporarily cutting the power connections and FIRs are being registered.

Apart from this, if the power connections are found to be faulty, such as excess load, mode change and other faulty connections, then the person is punished on the spot as per the rules and fine is being collected.

In the same sequence, in the financial year 2024-25, till the month of October, a total of 2934 power connections were checked by the vigilance cell, in which 1870 power theft cases (Section-135) were registered, which is 28 percent more than the cases registered in last financial year. By adopting a strict stance in the cases of power thefts by UPCL, the culprits are being curbed.

“in the coming days, with the installation of smart meters in the houses of consumers, not only the power supply in the area will get better, but power theft will also be prevented. The direct benefit of this step will be seen in the form of improvement in billing efficiency by assessing the correct input energy as well as in reducing AT&C losses and increasing revenue,” said Anil Yadav, Managing Director UPCL.

Effective steps are being taken by the Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers posted in the regional offices to stop power thefts and FIRs are also being registered against the defaulters.

To report power theft, consumers can contact through various means such as calling on 1912, where the identity of the consumer is kept confidential.
