Gabar Singh Negi was a soldier in the British Indian army from Uttarakhand, who was decorated with the highest Victoria Cross for his extraordinary valour in the battle of Neuve Chapelle during the World War-I.

Another Gabbar Singh Negi, who hails from Kotdwar area in the hill state, is hogging limelight these days for different reasons in the Silkyara tunnel rescue operation. Negi is trapped inside the silkyara tunnel along with 40 other workers since November 12.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has lauded Negi’s efforts for keeping the morale of the trapped workers very high. Dhami also spoke to Negi, an assistant foreman, to enquire about the wellbeing of other workers. “You people have shown great courage,” said Dhami as he talked to Negi through walkie-talkie on Thursday at SIlkyara. The Chief Minister also assured Negi that all the workers would be evacuated shortly as the operation was in the final stage.

Outside the tunnel, family members of Negi are also seen anxiously waiting for good news.

Negi along with other 40 workers were trapped when a portion of the tunnel caved in. Since then, intense efforts were continuing to evacuate these workers with Prime Minister Narendra Singh Modi keeping a close watch on the operation. Ends
